Lear Center Study Cited by FCC/Senate

Senate Commerce Committee chair John McCain and FCC chair Michael Powell cited a Lear Center report in a June 16 letter to the heads of all the broadcast networks. The Lear Center Local News Archive report found that stations aired nearly four times as many political ads as campaign stories during local news in the 2002 election.

A recent Variety article refers to the McCain/Powell letter and mentions the Lear Center report, which is also mentioned in a June 28 Broadcasting and Cable article.

The report was also cited on June 2nd in House Energy & Commerce Committee testimony by Gloria Tristani, former Federal Communications Commissioner. It also appeared in a June 24 op-ed in Roll Call by Norman Ornstein, former co-chairman, with Les Moonves, of a presidential advisory committee on the public-interest obligations of digital television broadcasters.
